The Lighthouse at Pier 61, New York, was the setting for the Whiskies & Spirits Conference North America on February 24th where delegates enjoyed presentations from a host of industry experts. The day began with an inspirational talk from Chris Bauder, General Manager and Vice President, Beam Suntory Whiskey & Cognac. This set the stage for Joseph J. Magliocco of Michter’s, Stranger & Stranger’s Ivan Bell and David Ozgo, Distilled Spirits Council to name a few. The day was moderated by Dave Sweet (Senior Vice President (North America), Whisky Magazine), Damian Riley-Smith (Managing Director, Whisky Magazine), Fred Minnick, Liza Weisstuch and Davin de Kergommeaux (Contributing Editors, Whisky Magazine) and sponsor Paul Farmer (Wade Ceramics). During lunch, the winners of the World Whiskies Awards 2015 American categories were announced and presented and three American heroes were inducted into the Whisky Magazine Hall of fame: Al Young, Steve Beal and Bill Samuels Jr.
On 19 March, industry leaders took to the stage again at the Waldorf Hilton in London for the Europe conference. Diageo’s Dr. Nicolas Morgan began proceedings with his fascinating presentation on distrust among consumers in the whisky industry. Delegates were also treated to a bit of luxury with an insight into the world of Duty Free and Travel Retail from Erik Juul-Mortensen and later Paul Topping. Felicity Murray, Editor of TheDrinksReport.com and Rupert Wheeler, Managing Editor of Whisky Magazine, moderated the day’s events.
With so many spirits industry professionals under one roof, this provided the perfect setting to announce the winners of the World Drinks Awards during lunch in the Waldorf’s stunning Palm Court.
